From 1G to 6G

A new generation roughly every ten years

Each mobile generation launched about a decade after the last: 1G in Japan (1979), 2G in Finland (1991), 3G in Japan (2001), 4G in Sweden and Norway (2009) and 5G in South Korea (2019). On that rhythm, 6G lands around 2030, which matches what the industry is planning.

Canada’s first launches trailed the world’s first by 5.6 years and 5.3 years for 1G and 2G, but by 4 months, 1.6 years and 11 months for 3G, 4G and 5G.
