Question 1 of 3

Is 6G coming? Yes. Around 2030.

The first 6G networks are forecast for late 2029–2030, and ITU’s global 6G standard (IMT-2030) is due by 2030. South Korea aims earliest, for 2028. Most countries are expected to follow within one to two years of the first launches, as they did with 5G.

Canada has announced no date. About 2030–2031 is this site’s estimate, labelled as such wherever it appears.

Common questions

When will 6G launch?

Nokia and Ericsson roadmaps forecast the first commercial 6G networks and devices for late 2029, with wider service around 2030, and pre-commercial trials from 2028. These are forecasts, not launch promises.

When is 6G coming to Canada?

No carrier or ISED has announced a date. Signal Atlas estimates 2030–2031, because Canada’s first launch trailed the world’s first by 4 months, 1.6 years and 11 months for 3G, 4G and 5G.

What has to happen before 6G arrives?

ITU is due to approve the 6G performance requirements in December 2026. 3GPP’s Release 21 then writes the first 6G specifications, with the final freeze planned for March 2029, and ITU’s final standard is targeted for 2030.

Which country plans 6G first?

South Korea has the earliest stated target, 2028. Signal Atlas lists 23 countries and blocs with a 6G plan or target year. Targets are government or industry goals, not launch promises.

Is 6G available anywhere yet?

No. 6G is in standards and research and has not launched anywhere yet. Labs and research funding exist, including in Canada, but there is no public 6G service.
